Welcome
On behalf of the organizing committee, we would like to cordially invite you to the 14th CAS-TWAS-WMO Forum. The 14th CTWF will be composed of two parts- Data Assimilation Summer School to be held on 1-3 July, 2015 and the Coupled Data Assimilation Symposium on 5-8 July, 2015.
The purpose of the Data Assimilation Summer School is to train graduate students and young scientists with comprehensive lectures by world leading scientists in various aspects of start-of-the-art data assimilation sciences ranging from theory to applications.
The primary theme of the Coupled Data Assimilation (DA) Symposium is "coupled data assimilation" in which "coupling" can be broadly interpreted to three subject areas:
(1) data assimilation for coupled systems that may include interactions among atmosphere, land, water, chemistry, biosphere, and human dimensions.
(2) data assimilation that couples different temporal and/or spatial scales;
(3) data assimilation that couples and/or hybridizes different DA methods.
Coupled model data assimilation can be very useful to unify short- and long-range forecasting systems and improve prediction of coupled phenomena such as Tropical Cyclones (TC), ENSO and the Maddan-Julian Oscillation (MJO); to obtain important surface fluxes between atmosphere, ocean and land; to improve the application of near surface observations. However this emerging, cutting-edge field faces many challenges, such as how to combine different data assimilation schemes used in atmosphere, land and ocean models, how to accommodate different time and spatial scales within and across component systems of atmosphere, land and ocean and beyond, how to treat model error/bias which is often large with little understanding in coupled models, and how to construct and use coupled covariances for extremely diverse sources of observations.
The 14th CAS-TWAS-WMO Forum will be organized by CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Climate and Environment Sciences (ICCES), Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and is sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), for the advancement of science in developing countries and CAS-TWAS-WMO Forum on Climate Science (CTWF).
